This collection contains 59 photographs gathered during the creation of Paddling to Where I Stand: Agnes Alfred, Qwiqwasutinuxw Noblewoman, the autobiography of Axu (also known as Agnes Alfred, ʔAx̌uw̓ and ʔAwuw̓aw). Martine J. Reid wrote the book in close collaboration with Axu and her granddaughter, Daisy Sewid-Smith. Axu was a noble Qwiqwasutinuxw woman from the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw Nation and is widely regarded as one of the last storytellers working in the classic oral tradition. The photographs span from the 1880s to 2003 and depict Axu, her family, and the places and people significant to her community.
