UBC Vice President Dr.Daniel R. Birch receives the Cree Name Mitche from Elder Dr.Ahab Spence, witnessed by Kathy Louis and Elder Margaret White. Verna J. Kirkness said of the name "in the language of the Cree people [Mitche] means "Heart" with the spiritual connotation of "life"" (The First Nations Longhouse: Our Home Away From Home, p.16).
