Correspondence of Racey and Harrison (1948-1949) and specimens

The Correspondence of Racey and Harrison Collection features previously undocumented correspondence between James Maurice (J.M.) Harrison and Kenneth Racey, as well as a selection of specimens that they exchanged with each other. J.M. Harrison (1892-1971) was a British ornithologist who primarily studied birds in the Kent region of England. Kenneth Racey (1882-1959) was a Canadian ornithologist whose extensive bird and mammal collection forms an important accession to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum’s Cowan Tetrapod Collection (CTC). Between 1948 and 1953, Harrison and Racey exchanged a series of letters, primarily requesting specific specimens from each other and details surrounding their exchange across continents. This Collection aims to document the beginning of their correspondence (from 1948 to 1949) and provide full text-searching to researchers. This will allow for more complete biographies of both Racey and Harrison, as well as better description of specimens in the CTC and other institutions.
