U.B.C. LIBRARIES I HATE MUSIC! ae A Cycle of Five Kid Songs for Soprano LEONARD BERNSTEIN Leonard Bernstein’s talents are formidable, to say the least. As composer, pianist and conductor he has moved in the diverse worlds of Broadway and the Concert Hall and has left his distinct mark on both. His career moved swiftly after he graduated from Harvard in 1939 where he studied under Walter Piston. He then went on to the Curtis Institute in Phila- delphia and studied conducting with Fritz Reiner. After graduating in 1941, Dr. Serge Koussevitsky took Mr. Bernstein under his wing. He later became Dr. Koussevitsky’s assistant at the popular Tanglewood summer concerts in the Berkshires. At 26 Leonard Bernstein exploded on the Broadway scene and became part of its permanent canon with the opening of On The Town in December of 1944. From that song and dance frolic of footloose sailors on shore leave sprung Fancy Free, a ballet which has become part of the repertoire of leading dance companies. While he has composed such fine orchestral works as the ‘‘Jeremiah’’ Symphony and Age of Anxiety (Second Symphony), it is through his show songs that he has achieved such renown as a composer: Candide, Wonderful Town, Trouble in Tahiti, and his powerful and haunting theatre masterwork West Side Story.
