St. John’s College UBC is modeled after such prestigious places of higher learning as the Oxbridge Colleges at Oxford and Cambridge in England and Green College at UBC. Architect James Cheng travelled to the original St. John’s University campus in Shanghai to study the architectural style of the build- ings. St. John’s College UBC brings together past and present—capturing the atmosphere of the Shanghai campus in a unique West Coast design. St. John’s College UBC will be reminiscent of the original campus in Shanghai. Its UNIQUE FEATURES OF ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE UBC ARE INSPIRED BY ST. Dhesetwo elements, together with the brick, exposed heavy timber construction within various rooms and sloped roofs—all key features from St. John’s University—will characterize the College at UBC. Residents and visitors will be able to learn more about the university that inspired St. John’s College UBC through memorabilia that will be displayed at the College. A private office will also be available for use by alumni and visiting lecturers. Located on the west side of UBC’s campus, St. John’s College UBC will be developed in three phases and upon completion will provide accommodation for more than 170 residents and include several meeting room facilities and seminar rooms, as well as dining facilities, lounge and social areas, and a landscaped open air courtyard. Phase one features single and double occupancy units for 35 residents and will be fully operational for the 1997/98 academic year.
