OLUME I EDITION #7 irculation Last Edition: 600 copies APRIL 22, 1983 0 Tumby Jim S¢ WS) TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. Business Licence Receipt: #52323 DON PHILLIPS - THE MAN BEHIND NORTH- FAST COAL Mr. Phillips started to work on the North Fast Coal Project early in 1976. His starting objectives were getting all nece- ssary infrastructure in place and also promoting the project by letting the Japanese know that the government would be playing a part in developing the project to a point where it could supply a sub- stantial part of the coking coal necess- ary. Mr. Phillips and the Social Credit Party are also very interested in developing the three main employment creating opportuni - ties in B.C. These employment creating opportunities are the high technology industries, coal projects, and all other resources British Columbia has to offer. Mr. Phillips believes it is the job of the government to start projects and offer assistance in funding projects and getting all necessary promotion that the private sector is incapable of doing. It is also his belief that contracts and other impor- tant business considerations should be left to the ingenuity of the private sector. It is Mr. Phillips' opinion that the diversity of a Prince Rupert seaport is one of the assets North East Coal has going for them. Mr. Phillips believes that the success of this project is due to the foresight of the private sector and the support of the Social Credit Party. A special thanks to Mr. Don Phillips for taking time out of his busy schedule and making this article possible. Derrick DeMelt CURLING NEWS Tumbler Ridge was represented in two bon- spiels recently. - The boys this past weekend travelled with two teams down the forestry trunk road to the Coal Miners Bonspiel in_ Hinton, Alberta. Eleven coal mines were repre- sented by a total of sixty-four teams with curlers from three provinces. The teams were: Denis Pope, Bill Draper, Len DeMelt, Gene Wusaty and Jim Hendry, Rod Ogilvie, Les Zoschke. The morning after the bonspiel the representatives of the Gregg River Mine gave the Tumbler Ridge group a tour of their mine and plant. A fun time was had by all. A special thanks to the organizers. Bonnie and Ellen Conn and Joyce Anderson represented Tumbler Ridge at the McKenzie Ladies Bonspiel on March 1/th. Teams travelled from across Northern B.C. for this spiel. However, the TR team was certainly the best received by all teams participating. As well as having a very good time, we mana- ged to take second in the C Event. Many thanks to our McKenzie hosts. We'll be back next year! Donna DeMelt travelled to Edson to join a group of the Grande Cache girls in the ladies annual bonspiel. COAL Developing this nation's coal resources will call for increased research into better methods of production and utilization. Other chall- enges include the provision of an adequate, skilled labour force, the investment of huge amounts of capital and the rationalization of many of society's conflicting goals. However, coal is the largest reservoir of raw energy in Canada and my be the only feasible way of bridging the energy gap during the decades ahead until new techologies to harness solar and other renewable forms of energy are fully developed. If it wasn't for the coal where would you be now? at Tumbler Times, Ridge, B.C.
