Sumitomo Corporation of
Janpan, a major trading
company will inject $10
million into Petro Canadas
Monkman Coal Project to
acquire a 12 per cent in-
terest in the mine, the
Crown corporation an-
nounced Oct 24. The money
will be used for engineering
and other development
work.

Monkman is a proposed
open-pit mine ap-
proximately 120 kilometers
southwest of Dawson
Creek, British Columbia,
expected to produce about
3.3 million tonnes of
metallurgical and thermal .
coal per year for export
markets. The mine is not
expected to come on
stream before the late
1980s due to poor coal
markets.

Exploration and
engineering work has been
undertaken by Petro
Canada, the mines
operator, and its partners,
McIntyre Mines Limited
and Canadian Superior Oil
Ltd. since 1977. Stage 2
approval was received
from the B.C. government
in August 1981..
