Address by Claude Galibois To begin, I should like to give you my version of “why I’m here’. Ap- parently the Minister of Education was unable to attend this official opening and the Board, unwilling to delay it, looked for someone to represent him. Last week, while’I was in Calgary on a bit of a holiday, I received a phone call asking me to do so. On the spur of the moment, and assuming that I would be receiving a written address or at least a telegram to read, I said “yes’’, But I was left on my own and had to write my own address so in my view I am not representing him but replacing him, and the thoughts I express are mine, not his. We all know that the government, including the Ministry of Education, has been taking a lot of heat lately, but today is not a time for recriminations. It is a day to give credit where credit is due. In the planning and construction of this school we received utmost co- operation from Ministry officials in speeding up the approval process (once everyone was convinced a school was’ indeed hecessary). I definitely wish to recognize the Board of School Trustees for the patience and trust they have displayed in the Tumbler Ridge develop- ment. Committing millions of dollars of public money, to build schools in the wilderness and_ hiring teachers for an unknown number of unknown students was, for them, a worrisome and frustrating experience. I’m sure .they often thought of “giving up” and letting someone else do it. But they perservered and today we are opening this school, thanks to them. They deserve our ap- preciation. Why is this school here? It’s here for parents and teachers to help children grow. It’s here for teachers to help children learn. It’s here for nurses to help children be healthy. It’s here for many other people to use to help children learn the skills of life. No matter who works or comes here, it is for the benefit of the children. Boys and girls, you are the most important people here. Without you there would be no school, no principal, no teachers, no books, no. desks————and I wouldn’t be here either. The school was built for you. It’s your school to look after. I have one wish for you:-later on when you graduate from the big school downtown, you remember your time here as happy and useful. Parents, if you want your children to have fond memories of their early school years, it will require your support and par- ticipation. A school is not a building. It takes people to create the’atimosphere and you should bé apart of that atmosphere. i I hope you all enjoy using these facilities as much as I have enjoyed being a part of their development. Lions one point Grey Cup fiasco. Yet there was another fast paced sporting event going on closer to home. November 26th and 27th, the Tumbler Ridge Quintette Coaltimers travelled to Dawson Creek for a two-day Oldtimers Hockey Tournament sponsored by the Dawson Creek Oldtimers. There were a total’ of eight teams participating in the tourney and each team played three games. The Coaltimers were victorious in all three of their games with an out- standing performance by Doug Berardine who had a hat-trick in the 6-5 win over Sexsmith. The other games were both 5-1 victories over Fort. St. John and Mackenzie. The Dawson Creek Oldtimers also sponsored a dance and buffet which took place on the Saturday evening, which gave everyone a break from the tension of the games and some relaxation. Jery Lalonde, public relations co-ordinator for the team, said that the Coaltimers were hoping to sponsor their own tour- nament in early April 1984 up in Chetwynd. Se let’s give our Coaltimers a big cheer for their outstanding win at the Dawson Creek Tour- nament. Keep up the good work guys! Cm iT, 7 <= . 2 AWE Ld» Z \ This Week — N .
