“LEARNING WITHOUT WITHOUT LEARNING [S PERILOUS. With the opening of St. John’s College UBC, the spirit of light and truth shines on. It marks the beginning of a new era for Johanneans around the world. St. John’s University Shanghai —China’s first English language university— was operational from 1879 to 1952, during which time the university nurtured its stu- dents to become internationally renowned leaders in such disciplines as diplomacy, finance, business management, economics, medicine, architec- ture, science, and agriculture. Since 1952, Johanneans have held closely to their dream of re-establishing the university. It is a dream based on the spirit of light and truth, which lives in THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA the heart of each and every graduate of this prestigious former university. The opening of St. John’s College UBC is the first part of the plan, which also includes the eventual re-establishment of St. John’s University in Shanghai, and upgrading the St. John’s and St. Mary’s Institutes of Technology in Shimpu, Taiwan. The former St. John’s University, Shanghai and St. John’s College UBC share the same philosophy—to promote the exchange of cultures and ideas between students and to strengthen the mutual understanding among nations. The motto of St. John’s College UBC will be “light and truth” and the guiding spirit will be “learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous.” SUMMER 1997 DAOUGHT Is LABOUR LOS: HiOUGET — CONEUCIOUS ST.
