Remember, your employer must be willing to spend time to train you and allow you to attend classroom training. • Ask for information about trades that interest you from a school counsellor or visit an Alberta Career Development Centre. What is an apprenticeship contract? • Talk to employers and people in the trades. The apprenticeship contract is a legal agreement between you and your employer, and is registered by the Alberta government. This means you are responsible for attending classes and completing your on the job training. Your employer is responsible for giving you the training you need to learn the trade and for paying you 40 to 90 per cent of the shop’s journeyman wage rate, depending on where you are in your training. The Alberta government arranges for your formal instruction and examinations as you progress each year toward becoming a journeyman. • Narrow your choices based on your own interests and abilities. How do I enter an apprenticeship program? You could enter an apprenticeship program if you: • have a minimum of grade 9 to 11, depending on the trade, • write and pass an entrance exam, or • participate in a school to career opportunity, such as the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), while attending high school. RAP apprentices can accumulate hours of on the job training as credit towards: • an apprenticeship program, and • a high school diploma, or • a certificate of achievement. Take a look at the trades...but first get the grades Most employers prefer to hire individuals with a Grade 12 education. The more education you have, the better your chances are of being hired and succeeding in your trade. In some trades all applicants, regardless of their education level, must write an entrance exam. The amount your wages increase may differ with each employer. How long does it take to become a journeyman? Depending on the trade, it usually takes between one and four years to earn an Alberta Journeyman Certificate. About 80 per cent of your training will take place on the job; the other 20 per cent takes place in the classroom. In most cases, an apprentice attends school full time for 4 to 12 weeks each year. The length of each apprenticeship program is listed on the back of this brochure. When you complete your training and pass all your exams, you will receive an Alberta Journeyman Certificate and begin earning full journeyman wages. What are the benefits of apprenticeship training? The classroom component of apprenticeship training teaches the theory behind the practical aspects you learn at work. It also exposes you to the latest technology in your trade and lets you learn a greater variety of skills. If you are interested in working in another province and you have completed an apprenticeship program in one of the Red Seal trades (identified in the list of trades on the reverse side of the brochure), you can write an interprovincial standards (Red Seal) exam. Journeymen who carry a Red Seal are qualified to work in their trade anywhere in Canada that the designation is recognized. How much does classroom training cost? The cost of classroom training depends on the textbooks and other classroom materials you need. During classroom training you may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits.
