The AFS is often referred to as a “Sunset Program.” This

is because it will end in the year 1999.

Treaty negotiations over outstanding land claims are

underway between B.C. bands, the Canadian govern-

ment, and the province of B.C., but this process could

take years to settle. In the meantime, individual bands

and tribal councils are negotiating Interim Measures

Agreements, which will protect and manage the fishing

resource until the treaty negotiations are complete.
