THE TUMBLER TIMES - PAGE 4 << [*| es a\ "Docs" By Weatherman Jack fave you ever been sun or moon gazing and noticed a halo or a rainbow-colored ring all around the sun or moon? Often, if you follow the ring around, you will see 2 - 4 smaller rings or bursts that are nore commonly called 'sundogs! at owpposite locations around that ring. These rings and ‘dogs! are signifi- eant weather forecasters and were used to predict the weather in ancient times. They are just as useful now to the ama- teur forecaster. Here's how: When a storm with moisture is a long way away, some of the water droplets are sucked up into the very high atmo- sphere. There they turn into ice crys- tals and drift with the high altitude winds. When the crystals drift between you and the sun, it sets up a prism - effect, refracting light through ice and creating a rainbow. The ice crystals are high and the winds are moving very fast. The more crystals there are, the smaller the halo(s), which means that the storm is getting quite near. Keep in mind that you can see the sun or moon so the storm clouds are not yet present. In fact, they are coming - much lower and slower and sometimes as far away as two or three days. Moon dogs are the best to see and watch since watching sundogs can hurt or dam- age your eyes. Forecast your own WX and watch the moon on March 26, 27, 28, or 29. It's a good time of season to be able to predict spring storms several days in advance. In the meantime, I expect above average temperatures in the latter part of March which means many recordings above zero and into the +8°C category.
