GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIRMAN For the committee and the many others associated with this gathering, I welcome our visitors and hope that the spirit of the ancient Coastal Indian Kathaumixw touches you all. As the festival developed, we were very encouraged by our many world-wide contacts. Their enthusiasm and the assistance of numerous agencies, firms, and individuals was appreciated. Next year the local Academy Choirs expect to do their own travelling and competing in similar festivals elsewhere. But, the following July, 1986, we will convene Kathaumixw again. Best wishes to the participants. Dal Matterson FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Kathaumixw 784. Music has, throughout history, been a basic form of human expression and communication. Our festival offers a forum in which we can express our human ideals through the most universal of all instruments-the voice. Let us remember the object of our performance is not to gain a prize, nor defeat a rival, but to share with each other as we travel on the road to excellence. I hope the new friends you gain and the west coast beauty you enjoy provides an added backdrop to your music-making. Best wishes to performers and listeners. oa Don James
