Call ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Phone 242-4048 bomb shelters OTTAWA (CP) — If there was a direct nuclear attack on Canada, half the population would die and of the remaining half, a large proportion would die of radioactive after effects, says Yvon Pinard, federal minister responsible for emergency planning. Pinard said Tuesday the federal government is working with municipal and provincial govern- ments to co-ordinate civil defence programs, “but certainly anything we attempt to do in that field would be very limited because of the disastrous effect of a nuclear war.” Responding to opposition questions in the Commons, he said the government has several nuclear fallout shelters and he would like to build many more. However, outside the House he said he had no specific amount of money to spend on shelters. Conservative MP Robert Wenman, MP for the British Columbia riding of Fraser Valley West, wanted to know why the government doesn’t launch a major civil defence program. Bill Snarr, head of Emergency Planning Canada, said in an in- terview the only shelters under consideration are for four provincial legislatures which lack complete facilities. They are Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island. Only the federal and provincial legislatures have facilities specifically designed as_ fallout shelters, said Snarr. Members of the general public will have to seek protection in the basement of existing buildings with concrete walls, such as shopping centres and office buildings. Come in and see the good guys...
