One spring day many years ago, a group of Cancer Society volun- teers decided to decorate the tables for a Cancer Tea with daf- fodils. These early spring blooms, they felt, represented a sense of hope — renewed life. Simpie but appropriately so. The fresh bright flower embodied exactly that feeling of hope and renewed life that the Cancer Society voiun- teers wanted to express in every facet of their work: Public Educa- tion to change social and per- sonal behaviour to encourage the prevention of early detection of cancer; Patient Services Pro- grams meeting both emotional and financial needs of cancer pa- tients and their families: and Re- search to enable scientists to in- crease their knowledge of cancer so that it can be cured or pre- vented Since the daffodil was such a fit- ting symbol, the same group of volunteers some years later dis- cussed the possibility of having a Daftodi! Day at the beginning of April — the Cancer Society's Campaign month. An anonymous donor ordered and paid for 5.000 daffodils to be flown into Toronto from Vancouver. The flowers were sorted, cut, and shipped out across the city of Toronto by a group of veterans from the Sec- ond World War. Today some eleven million daffodils are used across Canada to kick off the Canadian Cancer Society Aprii Campaign. From simple beginnings the daffodil has remained and grown strong as the symbo! of hope and re- newed life in the fight against cancer. DAFFODILS will be available in the Super Valu Store Wednesday 30 March at $1.00 a bunch. To place orders, phone Margaret Wilson 242-3457. All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
