During the long week- end of August 1, Tumbler Ridge’s recreation com- plex will become home for approximately 140 young hockey aspirants, from 13 to 17 years, from over 20 different communities throughout B.C., Alberta and the Territories. Their desire—to play Junior Hockey, their goal —to impress the scouting staff of the Portland Win- ter Hawks Major Junior Hockey Club, headed up by Director of Player personnel, Wayne Meier. Touted by many to be the elite judge of junior hockey talent in Western Canada, Meier has im- pressed those from within the NHL with his scouting recommendations as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, in the drafting of Steve Yzerman, Bob Probert, and Joey Kocur just to name a few of Detroit’s present club. The art of being a great scout is being able to look into the future. Last year Meier proved his foresight by investing his time on. the Tumbler Ridge camp, a unique move as most camps are held in central southern locations with a much larger population. And the move paid off, the Hawks placed four boys on their protected list. This year, Meier’s en- thusiasm is present, only this time with much great- er magnitude. The camp has expanded to encom- pass the Caribou and all communities west, along with the Peace and all communities north. This year’s camp will be invitation only, as Ed Sanford, Caribou and Western region, and Frank Moffatt, Peace Country North, have thoroughly scouted their areas. Accompanying It was a swing and a miss for a player on them in Tumbler Ridge, the Winter Hawks will have five more scouts in attendance. They are Pier- cy Kozak, Tom Swan and Leo Michond of Edmon- ton and Gary and Ozzie Bechtold of Calgary. To show their apprecia- tion to the Winter Hawks and Babyck Brothers Hockey School, Tumbler Ridge has set up a river boat trip on July 31 to Kinuseo Falls. Boats and drivers will be Frank Bun- ther, Tumbler Ridge Col- lision, Ed Connelly, Steve Babych Graham, Dave Hampel and Rusty Stevenson, Riv Tow. Supplying the gas for the trip are Tumbler Ridge Shell, Tags, Tumbler Ridge Petro Canada, Bull- moose Mines and Riv Tow. Lunch for the trip will be supplied by Super Valu. Truly a community effort, and Tumbler Ridge wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to those who bring their special skills and events into our community. hockey school In August Tumbler Ridge will once again enjoy the privilege of hosting the Babych Broth- ers Hockey School. This year there will be a hockey dorm provided at the. Community Centre making it much easier for young out of town hockey players to be able to attend the school. The head instructors for the school will include Dave and Wayne Babych from the Hartford Whal- ers, Ross Short of the Vancouver WHA Blazers, Rick Penner, the coach of the Manitoba Junior Hoc- key League, and Shellie Babych will be the fitness instructor. Assistant instructors on the ice will include Mike Brown, Mark Sanford, Jerry Olynyk, and Frank Moffatt. There will be at least four instructors per ses- sion providing intense in- struction for each young player. There is also a very good chance of guest in- structors attending for a couple of days each, Ran- dy Moller of the Quebec the Sylvia's Sluggers team as everyone Nordiques and Shane Church from the Calgary Flames. There will also be goaltending instruction to provide a_ well-rounded school for all the hockey players.
