generation is segregated and manipulated to the extent that young and old have no
idea of the other’s existence. Everyone believes that the space station is a real
planet, and no one has ever heard of Earth. They spend all their time efficiently,
whether it’s working or going to hypnotic cult meetings where they worship a
distorted version of Luna. They all fear and respect the Angels who patrol the skies
and people’s minds.

Jackie is the only one who is aware that something might be wrong. He hears a
sound that no one else does, and our story opens when one day, in frustration, he
sits down at a computer terminal and jokingly tries to have the first real
conversation of his life.

To his shock and delight, the machine actually responds to him and continues on
to tell him the truth about the space station. What has happened is that Jackie has
‘accidently’ stumbled on to a secret program left hidden in the system by Luna
just before her escape. The program has been instructed to respond only to
someone who has the heart to treat everyone - even a computer - with respect!

He decides to leave the station and go back to Earth, and begins the dangerous
journey through forbidden regions to Luna’s Palace, where he plans to stowaway to
Earth. With the help of one of Luna’s undercover agents on the station, he sets out
and meets a ‘‘doubting Thomas’’ like himself, who thinks he has all the answers,
but doesn’t. Then, for the first time in his life, he meets a person older than
himself; she is sick, and has been told she needs ‘‘a child’s memories’’ to get
better. Jackie is so struck by her warmth and humour that he gives her his own
memories. She recovers immediately and helps him through some difficult territory
to the wall of Luna’s Palace. Left alone and unable to scale it, he almost despairs
until he meets an ex-pilot who can’t remember his own name. Jackie is so moved
by this he gives him his. The pilot gratefully assists him over the wall, leaving him
there alone again. He now has no memories nor a name - he knows only where he is
going, and why.

Confronted by the authorities, he fails to identify himself, and is shot by a
spiritual magic, he is reunited with Luna back on Earth in the form of the captain of
her organization. Whether she eventually regains her rightful throne is for the
future to bring.
