Recall the B.C. legislature

VICTORIA (CP) — The
Social Credit government
should call off its “strike
against the legislature and
the people of British
Columbia,’’ and recall the
legislature into session,
Opposition house leader
Frank Howard said
Thursday.

Normally in democratic
countries which are faced
with a crisis, the govern-
ment recalls the elected
members to Parliament to
resolve differences for the
good of the people, Howard
said in a news release.

“They don’t adjourn a
legislative body, go into
hiding or leave the coun-
try,’’ he said.

“This government has
made a mockery lof our
parliamentary system.”

Premier Bill Bennett
adjourned the B.C.
legislature indefinitely on
Oct. 21 for what he said was
a cooling-off period and to
give those opposed to his
legislative program-cutti-
ng package a last chance to
try and convince the

Residents of northeastern British Columbia are
advised that some sections of the railway’s Tumbler
Ridge Branch Line are now energized with 50,000
volts of electricity. Like all power transmission lines,
the railway’s overhead power supply is safe unless
abused. Residents of the area’ are asked, however, to
pay particular attention to all warning signs; to refrain
from climbing trackside poles under any
circumstances and to ensure that children are not
permitted to fly kites or model aircraft in the
vicinity. Vehicle operators are warned also that the
height of vehicles and/or loads using grade crossings
should not exceed 4.1 metres (13 ft. 6 ins.), which
is the normal maximum permitted by the Ministry
of Transport and Highways.
