Mr. Cooper conducted the highly successful 1978 Ontario Youth Choir and the Stratford Youth Choir, which appeared throughout the 1980 festival. He is also director of the acclaimed Opera in Concert Chorus, and ensemble he founded, and teaches choral conducting at the University of Toronto. As a conductor and clinician, Mr. Cooper has travelled extensively and has worked with many choral organizations across the country, including the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Manitoba Choral Federations and the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association, as well as the Courtenay Youth Music Centre here in B.C. Robert Cooper Bruce Davis, a native of Toronto, began his musical studies as a trumpet player in junior high school. He took composition with Bruce Mather at McGill University and later worked in association with Murray Schafer at Simon Fraser University. Mr. Davis has written music for various theatre companies in Vancouver, and for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1976 he studied tribal singing in Australia with a group of elders from the Indulkana reserve, one of the last remaining areas of traditional Aboriginal culture. : He recently moved to Vancouver from Nelson, B.C., where he had taught at the David Thompson University Centre for four years. His latest composition, ‘‘Breakaway’’, specially commissioned for Kathaumixw with assistance from the Canada Council, is an unusual project in concept and scope, and has brought together Mr. Davis’s varied interests in music, drama and social history for the first time. 10.
