He Tumby hi 1983 EDITION 8 Last Edition: LUME I irculation WR, RON BASFORD DIRECTOR - NORTH EAST COAL | interviewed Mr. Ron Basford in his iffice in Vancouver. He is the director of North East Coal. Some of the things he does with North East Coal are: negotiate il] the contract agreements that the Prov- ince was a Signer of, etc. Mr. Basford's job as director is to coordinate all the construction projects so that they're completed by December 1, 1983 and to provide information on the whole North fast Coal project. How he got to be part of N.E.C. is he used to be a member of the Federal Cabinet. He worked with Mr. Phillips on an agreement that Canada and B.C. should study N.E.C. Next he did legal work for the Province. Then when Canada signed the agreements vith the Japanese, Mr. Phillips asked him to coordinate the whole project. He has deen part of N.E.C. since February 1981. Wr. Basford said its \.E.Cc. becuase it will provide a lot of jobs for people. It'll provide a lot of foreign earnings to support our dollar and | important to have Hlit'll provide a second port to the Pacific ‘(cean and better transportation for B.C., \|Alberta and Saskatchewan. |] mentioned to Mr. Basford that South East ‘Coal has had lots of problems and has lost Jia lot of their sales. Do you think North ‘fast Coal will be any different? His jlanswer was South East Coal hasn't lost any ‘lsales to North East Coal. South East Coal jhas lost sales this year for the first j|time because of the recession and as the jjeconomy picks up in the world, B.C. will ||have a bigger share of the world market ‘iyhich means B.C. will sell more coal. We he likes about working for North East Coal is it's very exciting to be part of something that is new and productive and that is providing jobs and also opening up Northern B.C. The other comments he would like to make are, the project is going better than he expected. We've been very lucky with the weather and people on the project have been doing a wonderful job. We thinks it's terribly important’ to Canada that we said things would happen by December 1, 1983 and people seem deter- nined it will happen.
