PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The reunion of Johanneans in Shanghai is a special moment for remembering and reflecting in humbleness on “the spirit of light and truth” which has inspired the life and work of St. John’s students in the many decades since leaving school. More than 40 years have passed since students last gathered together in the class- rooms of St. John’s. Is there a future for “the spirit of light and truth” which influenced the lives of young Johanneans so many years ago? I believe so. This summer, on July 28, 1997, — The University of British Columbia invites you to join us in opening Phase I of the new St. John’s College at UBC. The interest, concern and support of St. John’s alumni from around the world have played a vital role in rekindling “the spirit of light THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA and truth.” St. John’s College UBC and The University of British Columbia share a common commitment with the original school in Shanghai through the pursuit of academic excellence, a strong international focus to education and significant sustained linkages with acade- mic partners in Shanghai, across China, the Asia-Pacific region and the world. At UBC, we are honoured that many Johanneans.are supporting the establishment of St. John’s College UBC. Your ongoing support and commitment to this important initiative will see a revival of the spirit of St. John’s as outstanding students and scholars from China, Hong Kong, the Asia-Pacific region and around the world seek to more profoundly grapple with global issues. I share with you the dream of seeing St. John’s College UBC serving as a continuing testament to “the spirit of light and truth.” DAVID W. STRANGWAY PRESIDENT We are also very appreciative of the significant support of friends of the University who are not alumni of St. John’s University, but who readily support this initiative.
