EMPLOYERSTALK ABOUT THE ANEW PROGRAM SOME OF OUR SATISFIED EMPLOYERS "In the past five years, many programs were started to help women enter the trades in Seattle. In our opinion, none has been as successful as ANEW. The ANEW program is providing women with skills and knowledge needed to enter the trades. The emphasis on strength building, proper work attitudes, and skills training is what makes this program work." ANEW is designed to meet the needs of the employee and the employer. Three recent ANEW graduates, employed by the Seattle Water Department, are good examples of the service ANEW is providing." Leon Sproat, Training Coordinator Seattle Water Department "The training, experience, and commitment to which ANEW helps prepare applicants is truly remarkable.... Princeton will continue to utilize ANEW in our future recruitment practices. Dave |_awson, Personnel Manager Princeton Packaging Inc. "[ANEW] has provided us with qualified employees and has continued to work with us after placing the employee to assure our satisfaction.... We also appreciate the fast, efficient response when we call for referrals because, when we call, we usually need someone in a hurry. It's nice to know that I can count on ANEW when I need to hire new workers." Louis F Serna, Equal Employment Opportunity Officer Rogers-Olympic Corporation Steel Castings "ANEW has done an outstanding job recruiting women for our construction projects—even remote projects that are difficult to recruit and retain any workers for. "ANEW's graduates understand the demands of the construction industry, have realistic expectations, work safely, and are productive employees. The program is a leader in preparing women for the construction industry—that's why we continue to work with ANEW." Linda Olson, Labor Relations/EEO Howard S. TRAINING AND COUNSELING ANEW provides a 5-month skills training course. The course includes classes and practical hands-on experience in trade and industrial skills—carpentry, pipe cutting and pipe threading, basic electricity, scaffold building and climbing, concrete mixing and pouring, and fork-lift operation, to name a few. Weight-training and strength-building classes are an important part of the curriculum. ANEW's program goes beyond physical and technical skills. We concen trate on developing positive attitudes, a good work ethic, and a realistic under standing of the work place for women. Our employment counselors help students with issues affecting job readiness, career counseling, job search, and retention as well as follow-up support to our graduates and their employers. Because the ANEW program has been designed with the help of both labor and management professionals, our graduates are ready for the job with good skills, positive attitudes, and a willingness to learn as they work. ABOUT THE ANEW PROGRAM ANEW was created by a task-force of representatives from labor, management, and concerned community organizations who recognized the needs of women job applicants who choose to enter the trades and to facilitate labor and management in their commitment to hiring women. A proud record. ANEW CAN HELP YOU Employers can take advantage of ANEW's placement services. Our staff can recommend students to fill specific jobs based on the student's performance, record, and achievements. In addition we provide a variety of personnel services to local businesses and unions. We can assist companies with recruitment efforts, pre screening, interviewing, and on-the-job employee retention. Since it was founded in 1980, ANEW has enrolled and trained almost 700 women in the Job Skills for Tirade and Industry program. Seventy percent of these graduates have found jobs in the nontraditional trades or have pursued further vocational training. ANEW has worked with several hundred employers and apprenticeship coordinators and has established effective job referral procedures. ANEW's primary purposes continue to be to train women to enter the trades and to advocate the hiring of these trained, willing workers. Funding. ANEW is a nonprofit organization. We work closely with the Renton Vocational Technical Institute. Currently our primary program funding is through JTPA federal funds in conjunction with the Seattle/King County Private Industry Council.
