Blades thanked Council for their neutrality in the recent battle over North East Cable, adding that the hearing had been try- ing. However, he was most gratified with the outcome. Blades reiterated to Council that he was com- mitted to adding on four more channels, which will be on line by September 1. However, he added some may Start as soon as the 15 Warm up before exercise! MEMBER /ALLIED VAN LINES THE CAREFUL MOVERS | of August. The four channels in- clude the Community Channel, YTV, a new Canadian Youth © Net- work, and WXYZ, which is ABC out of Detroit. The fourth — channel, Blades said, is a bit of a problem as we are pre- sently getting all the Cana- dian stations available ex- cept one, a CBC-affili- ated, English station out of Montreal or the Com- mons Channel. The only other alternative would be to go to another Ameri- can station, and _ that would require another sa- tellite dish. In responding to ques- tions about the Com- munity Channel, Blades said the channel is strictly regulated by the CRTC. The channel cannot make money and there can be no advertising on it. He said that the degree of programming on_ the channel will depend solely on community involve- ment. He added that he plans to meet with the various groups and individuals in town through a_ public meeting to receive input on the channel and dis- cuss how to best utilize the channel. North East Cable will provide the video equip- ment for use by the com- munity, and then it will be determined how much time will be aired, depend- ing on the response. However, Blades added, in speaking with other cable operators, it appears that the com- munity channel is seldom used anywhere close to its potential. When there is no local broadcasting, stages for T.R. Days August 19-20-21. there will be an_ elec- tronic bulletin board with general public interest in- formation and cable in- “formation. Blades told Council that he had just received half of the new equipment ne- cessary for the channel ex- pansion, and the remain- der should arrive soon. Local cable subscribers may see WXYZ on the air any time after August 15, however, the new youth channel will not be avail- able until September 1. He also said that the channels will undergo a complete rearrangement once the new channels are added, with the American channels coming in on a different band. Channels 19 through 22 will house the American channels. This could be a problem for individuals with older T.V.s. They will require a VCR to be able to pick these up. Mayor Caisley thanked Blades for his informa- tion, adding that Council looks forward to the de- velopment of the Com- munity Channel. harvest books Trades welcome Used books Comics Maps Cassettes Records 35,000 books in stock Drop in & Browse There's something for everyone at Harvest Books 1016-102nd Ave. Dawson Creek, B.C.
