President’s Message I would like to extend a warm welcome to the opening of St. John’s College UBC. This is truly an occasion for great celebration. It marks the real- ization of the long-held dream of re-establishing St. John’s University and four decades of continuing the proud tradition of the ‘spirit of light and truth’ that shines as brightly today as it did in 1879. It also demonstrates the tenacity of Johanneans around the world and lends a renewed hope that the ‘spirit of light and truth’ may be rekindled at its original birthplace in Shanghai. St. John’s College UBC will bring together outstanding scholars from around the world and create a new generation of Jo We particularly thank Johanneans for their support in the establishment of St. John’s College at UBC and we are honoured by their involvement. Senior UBC representatives were delighted to have the opportunity to be in Shanghai during the St. John’s University Alumni Association’s 3° World Reunion and speak directly to Johanneans about St. John’s College UBC. They were heartened by the enthusiasm expressed by Johanneans about the re-birth of their alma mater. St. John’s University and the University of British Columbia share a strong tradition of emphasizing academic excellence and an international focus to education. St. John’s College UBC will serve as a testament to those graduates of St. John’s University who have dedicated themselves to keeping the spirit of St. John’s alive. Dr. David W. Strangway DR. GRANT INGRAM JOINS ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE UBC FROM HIS MOST RECENT POSITION AT MCGILL UNIVERSITY. Principal's Message It is a great privilege to have » been chosen to lead St. John’s College UBC. This 1s an exciting time for all those who have participated in the creation of the College. It will be a place where students from diverse fields of study and nationalities will meet and gain new understanding. Our goal will be to foster an atmosphere conducive to the open exchange of ideas and the pursuit of scholarship. It has been more than 40 years since St. John’s University, Shanghai closed its doors. The St. John’s alumni, better known as Johanneans, still recall ‘the spirit of light and truth’, which was their guiding principle. While the location of the new College at UBC is different, the fundamental approach of academic excellence and inter- national focus remain. I am committed to continue this tradition in the context of our present world. In order to create a successful St. John’s College we will have to forge new links, cross interdisciplinary boundaries, and develop new visions. This can be achieved with the collaboration of our College membership, UBC faculty and the continued support of Johanneans and the communi- ty. It is my hope that members of the College will promote a fruitful dialogue between Canada and other parts of the world for many years to come. We will explore and develop new ways of understanding each other. I thank everyone who has helped to make the Johannean dream a reality at UBC and look forward to assuming my new post as the first Principal of St. John’s College. ECa xT — Dr. R. Grant Ingram
