eee THE TUMBLER TIMES - PAGE 11 lue to the recent article printed in a local paper disputing Quintette's safety procedures, a spokesman for Quintette Coal limited has issued the following rebuttal: 1, Background information on Quintette's safety proceudres and policies already in place within the company: - Regular company Safety Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month. This includes both Management and Hourly representation. Minutes are kept and distributed to all members including the mine inspector's office in Prince George. There is also a major physical audit of all plant facilities conducted by the members of this safety committee. Crew safety meetings are held once very eight days which includes all crew employees and foreman. There is a part of this meeting which hourly employees discuss safety issues with- out the presence of supervisory and/ or management participation. Independent inspections are conducted at least once a month by the Mine Inspector from Prince George (Mr. Vaughan-Thomas). Our last inspection took place on Tuesday, April 12, 1983. All crew representatives were present and we were given a clean bill of health. You may want to contact him direct for comment as to Quintette's attitude and procedures with relation to safety. 2. Quintette Coal Limited Employees Handbook Right to Refuse Work: Any employee, who believes that he is required to work under dangerous or under healthy conditions, has the right to refuse work by notifying his Supervisor. The supervisor will investigate the alleged unsafe condi- tion promptly and, if warranted, cause it to be corrected. If the condition is not corrected to the employee's satisfaction, he may report it to the safety department. The Safety Supervisor or his design- ate will then investigate the condition with the appropriate super- intendent and elected area safety representative, and initiate correct- ive measures as deemed necessary. If the matter remains unresolved in the employee's opinion, it is forwarded to the Mines Inspector for his consideration. The employee is assigned to other duties at this time. EDITION #7 This is not only the policy of Quintette Coal Limited but also the Law. Mr. Gunter is not an employee of Quintette Coal Limited but a_ union organizer. Mr. Vaughan-Thomas is presently checking the validity of these allegations but we understand that only 8 of the 23 alleged incidents have been reported to him and he is somewhat hampered by the fact that they “will not" or “can not" disclose the names of the individuals making these statements. Bev Korman, to our knowledge, has never been in the Pit area within operations and these allegations appear to be based on heresay. Safety to our employees has always been and always will be of primary concern within Quintette Coal Limited. Al] matters related to Safety receive prior- ity attention and it is of concern to us (Quintette Coal Limited) that uninformed and irresponsible allegations such as these, would be presented as a fair assessment of the situation.
