C,H, Hosken Ltd., owned by Cunningham Drugs, has hired scabs to
attempt to break the strike of its 12 employees, The women are strik-
ing for a union agreement: the right to bargain collectively, a voice in
firing and promotions, job security, and decent wages, Their union
(Retail, Wholesale & Dept. Store Union) is legally certified, but the
company refuses to bargain seriously.

Their struggle affects all of us. 85% of working women in B.C, are
without any union protection, Women are used as cheap labor (the
average woman earns 40% of the wages of a man with the same educa-
tion), We are pushed in and out of the work force with little or no job.

As women, we are told that to be "feminine" is to be economically de-
pendent on a man, (Therefore, a ''natural'’ woman doesn't need equal
pay.) We are told that trade unionism is something men do, — It isn't
lady-like to stand up for your rights, oe

Women will win the. right to organize only if we act together. Defeat
for the strikers at Hosken would make it harder for other women to
organize, A victory there will be a victory for all of us.
