PASSP PUBLIC AWARENESS of SEXUAL STEREOTYPING & PORNOGRAPHY PASSP started in February of 1984 as POSITIVE ACTION AGAINST PORNOGRAPHY (PAAP) after the founders attended a public presentation given by Maude Barlow (Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Trudeau on Women's Issues) in Edmonton. With financial assistance from the Department of the Secretary of State Women's Program, PASSP opened its office in August of 1985. In November of 1988 PASSP members decided to expand PASSP's base of concern to include sexual stereotyping in the media and reflected that inclusion with a name change. Depending on funding, PASSP offers its services to the community 8-12 months of the year. PASSP is an independent grass-roots agency. We are made up of people from various careers, political affiliations and religious philosophies. PASSP's prime focus is educational. PASSP does not lobby. PASSP recognizes that the issue of pornography is a very complex one. PASSP defines pornography as: any material that degrades human sexuality through the depiction of physical harm, an imbalance of power and/or suggested or blatant humiliation. PASSP believes that pornography is harmful to women, men, children and society. PASSP acknowledges that the pornographic industry is a business that is perpetuated by social attitudes and beliefs. PASSP believes that through education and a change in attitudes and beliefs, pornography can be minimized and possibly eliminated from our society. PASSP defines sexual stereotyping as: images and attitudes, within a society, that condone and encourage the sexual or social domination, degradation and/or exploitation of one person or distinguishable group over another and in doing so limiting their opportunities to reach their full potential. PASSP suggests that sexual stereotyping, within a society, may encourage a greater tolerance and acceptance of pornography. SPEAKERS BUREAU PASSP's workshop/presentations are offered province-wide.
