Six Canadians are astronauts OTTAWA (CP) — The odds were slim and the tests tough, but five men and one woman have survived rigorous weeding out to become Canada’s first astronauts. Science Minister Donald Johnston announced today the names of the six who now will begin intensive training leading to flights aboard the United States space shuttle scheduled for late 1985 and early 1986. Three astronauts will train for a mission to test a new space-vision system to help calculate distances between objects. They are Marc Garneau ee one en ee E* CIASSIFIED ADS and Bjarni Tryggvason of Ottawa, and Steven MacLean an Ottawa native currently at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. The other three, who will prepare for a mission to study the problems of motion sickness in space are Roberta Bondar of Hamilton, Robert Thirsk of Montreal, Kenneth Money of Toronto. Only two will actually go into space and they will be picked about a year before the flights. The other four will act as back-ups — two for each mission. endl (Gaia aa - 16' wides available AFTER HOURS 532-0910 Mobile Homes Factory Direct - 14’ wides start as low as $23,450 F.O.B. Ten per cent was the ceiling imposed under rent controls, which were removed by the Social Credit government July 7. “There’s always a better alternative to rent con- trols,” said Patterson, who recently resumed his post following a six-month sabbatical in which he wrote an MBA thesis on removing rent controls. He said rent controls distort demand and rent- controlled units are available on a random basis, which means someone earning $100,000 a year could live in a rent- controlled unit. The demand is distorted, he said, in that a family, although it may become smaller, won’t move from a rent-controlled apart- ment because the rent is kept low, preventing a larger family from moving in. Patterson said he has “stayed out of the con- siderable public debate”’ over whether rent disputes should be settled in the courts, but he said he has favored rent control removal for the past four years. GOING SMOOTHLY The abolition’ of rent controls in B.C. has been quite smooth, Patterson said, noting that only 40 per cent of rents in the province were still under controls when _ the legislation axing them was introduced. Michael Walker, B.C.’s chief critic of rent controls, said Sunday that while after 10 years of rent controls there are going to be some dramatic examples of rent increases, there is no way landlords can raise them very far. “A survey by the Ren- talsman in the month following the end of con- trols found 92 per cent of the increases were under 15 per cent,” said Walker, director of the right wing Fraser Institute. Walker said the 15-per- cent boost matched a projection he made in 1977 on the removal of rent controls. He projected that if rent controls were removed, rents would increase by a minimum of 11 per cent, a maximum of 19 per cent, and average out at 16 per C & L NEW and USED FURNITURE and SUPPLIES Power tools eShop tools Collectibles eAntiques & Reproductions eUpholstery Supplies If we don't have what you want we will make an effort to find it. Edward Pennington, a Kansas City mailman, flew to London so he could buy one of the prized Christmas presents for his five-year- old daughter. ‘My daughter Leana was almost in tears because we couldn’t get one,’’ said Pennington, 44, after arriving at London’s Heathrow airport. “T heard that there were some in London so I decided to jump on a plane, pick one up, go straight back to the airport and fly home again.”’ Reporters from the London Daily Star met Pennington at the plane, whisking him away for an exclusive interview as reporters from other British papers chased after them. Pennington’s’ wife, Maggie, is a flight at- tendant for Trans World Airlines. She said she was able to get a reduced fare of $246 for the flight. axe | . oy _ Plainsman Motor Inns.
