Accident free grad The Tumbler Ridge Ambulance Service is very pleased to note that their Grad Night Taxi service was well used this year. Congratulations to all those teens who were smart enough to avail themselves of the service. Jeff Laurie, Unit Chief, reports that 201 kids were transported safely on grad night. This represents a 30 percent increase over last year. It is encouraging to note this increase, especially when you see the horrible results on TV of those who didn’t. One would only have to have been a resident in Port .Hardy recently to bear witness to the tragic results of a grad-related accident that took four young lives in the blink of an eye. We can only hope that the common sense _ that made these young people use the taxi service will carry over into later life whenever they decide to celebrate and drive. There are so many alternatives to drinking and driving these days’ that taking chances just isn’t worth it. Laurie says that the ambulance attendants will continue to provide this service in years to come, along with all the other safety-related, community programs that they offer. They are glad to have been of service. He also wants to offer his congratulations to the many chaperones who at- tended the party. They did a lot to ensure that every- one partied safely at the site. It must also be noted that, although most of the kids were gone by 5 a.m., the vast majority of chap- erones were said to have continued their separate party for a few hours after that. Who said that the older generation doesn’t know how to have a good time! C.P.R. saves lives You can bet there is one set of parents that are glad they participated in the Ambulance Services Citi- zen CPR Program. Early one evening this month, a 15-month old baby girl suffered a seiz- ure in Tumbler Ridge. She stopped breathing, and ‘her mother was able to revive her by using CPR techniques she had recent- ly learned at a course taught by an ambulance volunteer. Ambulance crews and the clinic nurse were at her side within minutes. How- ever, in cases like these, it is quite often not quick enough. Fortunately, this moth- er had had a very close call ~ ASPOL MOTORS LTD. 1125 - 102nd Avenue, Dawson Creek, Fax # 782-1236 of a similar nature a few months ago. This near miss prompted her to seek out the training that saved her baby’s life. Let’s hope that it doesn’t take a good scare to show you the very real benefits of learning basic ‘‘First Responder’’ CPR. All living things need oxygen to survive. Any failure of either the body’s oxygen intake or the blood circulating systems will usually cause almost immediate (within 4-6 minutes) cell death.
