Recent Activities and Social Events Coffee House and Talent Show At the first event of its kind, residents of St. John’s College had the opportunity to display their creative talents in the Fairmont Social Lounge at a Coffee House and Talent Show on November 13. The event was organized by the residents and revealed much talent. The evening began with theatre improvisation by the SJC Clan of Comedians. Other acts included songs, piano pieces, as well as performances on guitar and double bass. Some read poetry and danced classical ballet, salsa, and tango to the great enjoyment of a nearly full house. The success of this unique evening at the College has already inspired plans for a sequel. SIC Program News supported the presentation of six lectures on Global Change Issues. Future academic plans include the establishment of permanent lecture series on Global Change Issues and on Communicating about Science, featuring invited speakers and resident participation in small workshops. : The College was honoured T.E. Mr. George The highly successful Resident Speaker Series, established in October 1997, continued this Fall with a full slate of Monday evening talks by St. Shen spoke in October, as part of the Diversity of World Cultures Lectures Series, about the blending of the traditional Chinese approach to teaching and those of the Western liberal tradition at St. John’s University in Shanghai during the 1940s. Later that month, Mr. TE Ying spoke about his experiences as a student at St. John’s University and his life during those difficult years following World War II. John’s College residents. September 1998 also saw the launch of a new lecture series on the Diversity of World Cultures, with invited speakers from the UBC campus. The aim of this series is to encourage residents to learn about other cultures, religions and ethnic ms. The College also SJC LONGBOAT TEAM Day of the Longboat On October 24th, eight brave residents (Christine, Michael, Dominique, Mette, Jim, Angela, Glendon, and Cheryl) of St John’s College and two non-residents paddled their way along a 2km course from Jericho Sailing Center to Jericho Beach and back for the annual UBC Day of the Longboat. They placed in the top three during the trials, which qualified them to com- pete in the semi-finals and then the finals. A salmon dinner and dance was held on Saturday evening to celebrate, socialize, and prepare for the finals on Sunday. Overall, St. John’s placed 4th amongst UBC residence teams. A fun and memorable time was had by all the participants. Expansion of St. Johns College Facilities On August 25th, St. John’s College completed the second phase of its building program. With this most recent addition of new rooms, the number of College residents has grown from 32 to over 100. Residents are enrolled in programs from over 35 different departments at UBC and come from 25 different countries. To help celebrate the opening of its new phase and to welcome both new and current residents, the College held its Welcome Dinner on September 10th, 1998.
