Giesbrecht On October |! and 2, 1988, the Peace Country Weavers and Spinners will be holding their fall con- ference in Grande Prairie, Alberta. There will be two intensive hands on work- shops, One on rug weaving, techniques with Bryn Pin- chin, and the other on spinning novelty — yarns Showcase dedicated by Bryn Watson On June 27, before the presentation of awards for the high school students, an opening ceremony for the new display case was held at the Tumbler Ridge Senior Secondary School. As parents and teachers gathered, featured speak- er Michelle Davies, along with the Students’ Coun- cil, presented a short speech recognizing those who had a hand in the construction of the show- case. Those who were recog- nized for their generous contributions of money were Walter Hogg, princi- pal, Vi and Glen Martin, The Tumbler Ridge Com- munity Arts Council, the Students’ Council, and the workers of the school concession. She has been teaching weaving, for more than 12 years and specializes in- weaving rugs. Her work — has been exhibited in Cali- fornia, Calgary — and — Bantf. A Shannon has a Master Weavers certification from the Guild of Cana- dian Weavers. Her work — has been widely exhibited, most recently in’ Vancou-— ver, Smithers, — Prince George, Kamloops, and Banff, Alberta. In conjunction with the conference the PCSW. is preparing to hold its see- ond juried show. The — categories for entry. are wide and varied with room. for both spinners and weavers, from novice to advanced. Pinchin will jury the show. Our last conference, in March of this year, was a chemical dye workshop — held in Fort St. John. As an introduction, — Claire — Babcock from Emily Carr — College of Art spent a couple of hours explaining how the color wheel. is achieved. After lunch, Jill Sutton from Fort St. John spoke on ways to attain colors from the three pri- maries. From these three, - 63 shades are possible. Following, this, a great time was had putting the color theory into practice. - There were many dye pots on the go and some beatu- tiful colors were produe- ed. Some participants also — tried their hand at micro-— wave dying. The PCSW conferences are held twice a year—one in the spring and the other in the fall. Three newslel- ters are published and- mailed to the membership each year. q
